Things to Do in Ontario

Ontario is known for many things, from its food to its perfume. Here are some of the top things to try: poutine, maple syrup pancakes, and roast beef. You might have heard of famous hockey players who were born here. Or you might even have seen the movie, “The Great White North.” Whatever your reason for visiting Ontario, you’ll want to make sure you have a good time. If you haven’t yet, read on to find out more about this beautiful province.

Canada’s diverse culture

Despite the country’s diversity, Canada does not have a single national culture. Canada’s melting pot ideal is true to form, with hundreds of distinct cultural influences. English and French share official-language status, and the dominant language generally determines the local culture. The aboriginal populations of Canada, for example, have remarkably unique cultures. Immigrant groups have integrated into Canadian culture, maintaining distinct elements of their ancestral homelands.

In the mid-twentieth century, mass immigration from Europe and the United States forced central authorities to rethink the role of “other ethnic groups” in Canadian society. Now, this policy is widely accepted and promoted. It is also accompanied by a rise in social activism and political gains. In addition to the social and political benefits, Canada’s diverse culture has helped foster greater understanding and respect between the country’s many groups.

Throughout the past few decades, Canada has actively promoted its multiculturalism. The federal government established the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism (CCCM) in 1973. This body was later renamed the Canadian Ethnocultural Council (CEAC). Moreover, Canada has ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Furthermore, Canada has enshrined the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICCPR), the Canadian Human Rights Act, and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In May, the Government of Canada declared May as Asian Heritage Month. The budget also announced educational and commemorative initiatives highlighting the contributions of ethnocultural groups impacted by immigration and war measures. Moreover, in March, the Government of Canada launched A Canada For All: An Action Plan Against Racism. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to the recognition of Canada’s diverse culture. However, it should not be limited to cultural celebrations.

Ethnic and cultural origins are listed in the census, and over 11.1 million Canadians report an ancestry from one of these groups. Ethnic groups make up nearly one third of the population, while Aboriginal people make up the other third. Among Aboriginal ancestry, 2.1 million people reported being of First Nations (North American Indians). The most common ancestry were Cree, Mi’kmaq, and Ojibway. Another five hundred thousand people report having some Inuit or Metis ancestry.
