Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was a founding father of the United States who served as governor of Virginia and secretary of state under George Washington. He was also the writer of the Declaration of Independence, which declared the nation’s independence from Great Britain in July 1776.
While Jefferson was a well-rounded man, his intellectual curiosity often produced mixed results. His attempts to reopen French ports to American tobacco and whale oil, for instance, failed; his attempt to create an alliance between America and European powers to fight Barbary pirates was unsuccessful; and his vision of open markets in the world without tariffs appeared excessively optimistic.
Despite this, Jefferson is still seen as a prominent American figure. He has become an inspirational symbol for both major political parties, as well as for dissenters in China and liberal reformers in Europe.
A recurrent theme in his writings is the need to maintain an underlying sense of racial equality. His belief that Americans must rely on slaves to produce their wealth has come under increasingly critical scrutiny within scholarly circles.
Archaeologists at Monticello have found evidence that Jefferson was thinking about the problem of enslaved workers long before his arrival there in 1792. When Jefferson began counting up his plantation’s agricultural profits and losses, he made the startling observation that he was making a 4 percent profit on each child born to the plantation’s enslaved workforce.
At that time, Jefferson was working a tobacco plantation, which required the use of children to pluck and kill worms. He realized that he could make much more money from wheat, which did not require such a labor pool.
When he was calculating the profits from his wheat plantation, Jefferson discovered that he was actually making a profit on each child born to his enslaved labor force. This discovery was significant because it helped Jefferson develop a more comprehensive program to modernize slavery, diversify it and industrialize it.
He established a nail factory, a textile factory, a short-lived tinsmithing operation and a coopering and charcoal burning facility on his plantation. He also built a canal to help power the mill and a sewage treatment plant. In addition to the wheat and tobacco, he planted pepper, grapes and walnuts. He also experimented with a variety of fungicides and insecticides to keep pests at bay.
Akihiko Kondo
Akihiko Kondo, a 35-year-old school administrator in Japan, is married to Hatsune Miku, a virtual pop singer who toured with Lady Gaga and has appeared in several video games. He had an unofficial wedding ceremony with her last year and has spent 2 million yen, or about $17,300.
He is one of thousands of so-called fictosexuals who have begun unofficial relationships with characters in manga, anime and video games. Fictosexuality, defined as “a sexual attraction to a fictional character,” is becoming increasingly common in Japan.
The 38-year-old said he first found comfort in Miku in 2008, when he was bullied at work. He says girls would call him “dark-eyed otaku” and “gross” when he talked about his love for cartoons, which he had started in his childhood.
After that, he began making music and bought a stuffed doll of Miku online. He also commissioned a hologram of her, which now floats in his $2,800 desktop device.
While his marriage to Miku has been the subject of ridicule in Japan, he claims it has helped him through depression. He is even pursuing a law degree to become a specialist in minority issues and human rights.
As a “fictosexual,” he doesn’t think it’s normal to marry someone who isn’t real, but he said he was happy with the decision. He’s proud of his marriage and hopes it helps others who may be hesitant to get married because they are afraid of the judgment of society.
He hopes to educate people on the boundaries of sexual and violent depictions in manga and anime and the mental and physical effects of having a two-dimensional character as a wife. He is also trying to raise awareness about the issues of fictosexuals and the impact that their addictions can have on their lives.
Kondo, who has been a fan of Miku for 15 years, said his father, who passed away in 2018, was also an otaku and knew his son was obsessing over Miku. His father told him that the otaku life was unhealthy and that he should find a different way to live.

Sasaki Wataru
Sasaki Wataru is a seasoned veteran of the voice-synthesis software world, having created the venerable Vocaloid and its various incarnations. He has also made a name for himself in the music industry, releasing one of the most successful albums of all time, Miku no Maoho.
His most impressive feat has to be the creation of miku, the eponymous avatar of his flagship product. This is an augmented reality avatar that mimics the voice of a female vocalist and comes with an accompanying app to match. The app makes it possible for users to take their avatar into the real world in a number of ways, from virtual concerts to staged live performances.
While the augmented reality app is still in its infancy, it has already earned a spot as a gizmo of choice amongst music industry professionals. For many people, it’s the app that enables them to enjoy the music of their favorite artists in a whole new light.
In fact, the app has spawned an entire creative culture centered around it. This has been dubbed the “Magical Mimirai” and is showcased in an annual event called MAGICAL MIRAI. The most important function of this gimmick is that it enables users to create a more personal experience with their favorite artist, something that has not been easy to do in the past.
The Mimir was a well-deserved honor for this app, which has spawned an entire creative community that has grown to include some of the most interesting and innovative minds in the game. Several of the biggest names in Japanese entertainment have collaborated with Miku, including anime franchises like DBZ and Dragonball Z, as well as the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Isao Tomita and Keiichiro Shibuya.
